Toru’s Fashion {Show}

One of the things I liked about ‘Majo Saiban’ was the many times Toru got to change outfits. happy.gif

Compared to to the ‘Maou’ drama, there was definitely a lot more outfits. I guess I got a little case of ‘clothes envy’ when watching Korean ‘Ma Wang’, and saw that even the detective on a big case could still change his clothes a little more. >< Ok, but I realized shorter series like doramas may not need extensive wardrobe as Hong Kong, Taiwan or Korean drama (which got to fulfill 20+ episodes).

So, what a surprise and delight to notice with each episode that Toru changed into (or a mixture of) something new, and then changed again, again, again, again, and again! The ‘designer’ trait written in surely decided that it was to be a fashion show too.

Note: Toru also has a white version with ‘THINK TWICE’ written in black.

In Episode One, the self-proclaimed designer turns up to jury duty in one of his own creations, the ‘THINK TWICE’ t-shirt. What started with one t-shirt; revealed later on to come in different colours to play a part of Toru’s fashion, ended up becoming a bit of a Toma icon. I’m sure majority of fans loved the ‘THINK TWICE’ t-shirt. It’s such a simple concept that’s worked into the character and the storyline (slogan anyone?), and raise a little fanfare. /(’o’)/

My favourite ‘THINK TWICE’ t-shirt colour would still be the orange. White words on orange. – I’ll wear that. ('_'}b

Toru didn't have to work (during the trial) or was a student, and so he didn't have a set uniform that he had to re-wear during the show. This freedom increased the variety of clothes he had, in different styles and in such a range of colours. Some looks were a instant love, and some grew on me over each perusal. I compiled a list of my favourite ten outfits of Toru. (Forgive my use of un-fashionable lay terms. I’m just a normal everywoman.)

MY TOP TEN

#10 : Sunshine Bright

Such a bright yellow! I’m not sure if many could pull it off (maybe I’m thinking in real life. Anything is possible in dramaland). The brightness of the yellow works well with a simple white tee inside, and jeans. The extra stripes on the shoulder and the sleeve adds a extra touch. The outdoor scenes reminds me Toma is sunshine!
*

#9 : Iconic Mr Orange
This is the first time we see Toru in the series, and it's the iconic character look that sets the impression. The tee is bright and colourful, and the denim overshirt is interesting with it's patchy patterns. This is Orenji-san, how could it not be memorable.
*

#8 : Ready-for-Action Wear
An earlier shot showed Toru contemplating in his room wearing a bright fluro yellow singlet and jeans. Later the full outfit revealed a extra cool-looking blue jacket. Zipping up quarter of the jacket still showed off enough fluro yellow to match his showlaces - and beside keeping to his stylish image, I felt he was totally outfitted for his 'stalking mission' that day. For stealth, for running, for escaping and possibly even fighting ...Toru was ready for action.
*

#7 : Colour Division
The simplicity of the light jacket over his yellow THINK TWICE t-shirt is what I like about this. But it is also how the colours comes about with the division of the jacket (in the white, blue and red) and the yellow in the middle. Colours is really the 'thing' for Toru...haven't seen him in black...
*

#6 : Stripey Stripes
Solid brown boots, cargo pants and a stripey shirt. Unusual for me, but I do like this ensemble, and kept coming back to this while I was ranking faves. On a closer look, the shirt is in that coarse thick material, and if not for the bold-hearted, the colours and pattern could double for a pyjama top. But Toru pulls it off so nicely. Especially, in the daylight scenes, I find the strong yet subdue colours frames his shoulders and give light all around his hair and face.
*

#5 : Checkered & Sparkles
I loved this checkered shirt! The red colour is strong yet not bold, with some extra visual details coming from the gemstones sown across the top. The cargo goes well with this outfit (I like this more than paired the stripey shirt one). I find he was looking quite rugged here in this gear, especially in the full length view...(the gemstones are probably a bit sparkly in close up view...hehehe)
*

#4 : Home Comforts

It probably was the way his frizzy hair was pushed back that caught my eyes first, but how could you miss his home wear. He seems comfy yet still with the touch of Toru style. I loved the colours and make-up of his cardie. And does look so comfy!
*

#3 : Raise The Green Collar
The green just struck out at me. I loved how the simple yet bright green highlighted against his light coloured hair. And I liked the way the collar rose high sometimes, creating an extra stylish effect, especially in those high camera shots.
*

#2 : Red Ready For Style
Ah, gotta love the red cardigan - it's so striking! And the whole layering effect looks great; the cardi, over the vest over the tee. And the great scarf to top it off. What a stylish little number. I just love it in every different angle.
*

#1 : The Jacket
While I was deciding on the rankings, I kept tossing over a few, and realised the pattern. It was the jacket - the khaki coloured jacket. I think the look and the cut of it looks really good on Toru. And so I grouped it all here for my number one ranking.
When he first wore it in Episode 3, it was a new outfit and an addition with a scarf. I thought he looked stylish and the yellow worked well with the green. And, again, how I like his look at the restaurant scenes, where the camera showed lots of half shots.
I guess, it must be my most favorite combo is when he was at the crime scene. The khakai jacket over the orange THINK TWICE tee and jeans. It's a winner for me. ^_^

*
There were more I liked and wanted to comment on too. It became a bit hard to decide the list. But if I kept adding more, I'll probably end up ranking most of the them. Top Ten sounds nice and rounded. Special mention to the almost-Grease moment in Episode 6. I couldn't really include in my Top Ten, as it was out-of-character for Toru, but I liked it so much because not only did Toma still looked good, it almost like a a internal thing just for Toma fans. LOL.

All the outfits/looks from Majo Saiban.

Wonder what are some of the fans' favourite Toru outfits/looks from the series? You can see everything he wore from the above picture. Don't have to pick from my top 10.

Comments

Ah, I love this entry! Toru does have nice style, and I totally agree on the olive jacket being his best look. It reminds me of his Maou look since the shirt he wore was very similar to it. The jacket plus the orange THINK TWICE t-shirt is the best.

I really loved his orange and blue striped hoodie, too (I have one very similar to it). Heck, Toma just looks good in anything.

Yes! His Grease moment! While not "Toru" it was definitely an awesome moment. Although, Toma really shouldn't do that hairstyle in real life. I think only Matsuoka can pull that one off. ^_^
Ahhh...the jacket...I did consider writing that in..that it looked a bit like the Serizawa one. Ha. I still did love it on him in Maou. As with both jacket's, I always think a bit of roll-up sleeves is a good look on Toma (like those fitted blazers he wears in real life).

The orange and blue striped hoodie is the home one right? I saw one similar and was going to get one too (I was influenced...) but they only had one left, and was too huge for me...

right!! i didn't realize it, but this jacket does kinda look like his jacket in Maou. no wonder i like it a lot. but this one is nicer, of course. so many things about majo reminds me of maou, really....
Yes, Majo's one is more stylish and be a more going-out wear, whereas the Maou brown one is workwear.

Iconic Mr Orange has his iconic outfit, and so does Iconic Detective-san...his Maou-catching jacket. It's classic and well loved too. And that short time with the white jacket gave him such a dashing air of handsomeness... ^-^
right, but both of them are like...made of the same material? =) anyway, both of them are cool, though majo's is-- well, what u said. =P

yeah, really cool that each character has his own iconic outfit. yeah, it was out of character, but he looked so good in it. ^^ even though toma's hair was kinda messed up, at least the clothes made up for it!!
Could be same material. Maybe Majo's one is a little stiffer in the cut. Maou's one needs to give him running flexibility..hehehe

you're probably right. ^^
really~ toma had so many cool outfits in majosai. i wonder if he got to keep any of the clothes, or buy any of them for himself...i think he said he got to take the belt he used in maou? heehee~
I think the man looks good in everything, even the stuff that makes me go EH?

My personal favourites are the checks and sparkles, his Orenji-san outfit and the red ready for style (AWESOME NAMES, BTW XD). And, of course, his lazy at home hair, which killed me laughing whenever it popped up XD

And his Grease moment. Oh my lord, that was fantastic &hearts I didn't know whether to laugh or to cry XD

Awesome entry!
I think the man looks good in everything, even the stuff that makes me go EH?
I know! Sometimes when I really look at the outfits carefully and break it down, and consider it on someone else...I really would go...eh - how does it wear it so well!

Lazy home hair rocks. Hehehe. I kinda see other JE boys do funny things to their hair in drams when they're at home, like tying the long fringe up ...

(AWESOME NAMES, BTW XD)
Thanks.
i enjoyed reading this entry~! i agree with you, he never donned anything black in the whole series, did he? out of all the outfits, i liked the red checkered shirt, the khaki jacket and the denim jacket over the orange "think twice" tee best (not in that particular order, though)...

Thanks for reading. Yeah...no black outfits...I guess the producer wanted colours all the way.
I love this <3

Compare to Maou where Toma only wore same costume all the time, I like how the stylist made different style for Toma (or Toru).

I think I like 'red ready for style' most ^^.
I like, counted the times he changed in Maou...*fail*...changing a few times of the top inside his jacket doesn't really count much, as his overall appearance looks the same to the unconcerned eye...

The Red cardi was <3
i enjoyed reading this entry. very detailed.

for me, i love the bright yellow shirts that Toma wore. like most of us think, Toma is sunshine. Toma's bare arms in your #8 are just so smooth i want to press my cheek on them.

i totally bought your hairband!Toma in #4. because i can fully see his beautiful face. i loved his Grease moment as well because it's proof that Toma can be over the top & still pull it off without losing an ounce of gorgeousness.

bottom line: Toma looks good in anything. no matter what he wears, i always get captivated by his beautiful face.

thanks for this post!
Glad you enjoyed the post.
Lots of the daylight scenes just seems to highlights the clothes, and reflected it off his golden hair and his face. The bare arms were only a teaser moment, but it was a quiet scene where you could just look... XD

Yes, over-the-top Grease moment deserved a special mention. Kya!

LOL this is so awesome and amusing at the same time. My friend and i were saying how good Toru always dressed despite being poor, and just before we saw Ryouske, a rich boy that had only like 2 outfits. And after noticing we came to the conclusion that poor people dress better than rich rofl.

And i love LOVED the "Home Comforts" one it's so cute, i remember the first time i saw it i melted in my chair, he looked so cute~ And the "Ready for Action" it just simply kicks a** is so amazing.

I think who eer was in charge of the wardrobe for this drama did an amazing job, by far have been the looks i've liked the most. Well maybe Hanadan's are tied with them.

pd. I might be biased towars the color yellow but i think Toma looks great in it *___*
Ah, yes, Toru is a poor guy, yet he changes more times than rich Ryosuke. In Maou, he is rich too, yet I know he is a passionate about his job and doesn't care for his family's wealth.

So, it's like Majo made up, and spoiled us so much with sooooo many outfits changes this time for the previous dramas LOL

So, yellow is your fave - isn't that cool that THINK TWICE comes in yellow too!
oh man!

I really, really liked the way he was dressed in Majo Saiban too!
And I would really love to have tt tshirt. LOL.

Quite hard to pick a fave, but if I really had to...

I'd pick #9 Iconic Mr Orange. ^^
Cos somehow I remember Toru as the guy who wears that. Haha.

This is to be followed by #2 cos he looks damn hot in that. XP

Thanks for putting this up. I've had a very very awful start to the week, and this cheered me up! Thank you!
Hope you are feeling better. Glad you found the post enjoyable.
'THINK TWICE' tee is a wonderful concept. I wished those Japanese fans who won the Majo competitions would post up pics of their prize. They would have given away quite a few...lol, since 'Toru' printed a whole boxful, right?

I LOVE this post! XD
I also love Toorus style! So nice ne!
My fav top 3 styles were the "Ready for action" The "Colour devision" and the "Checkered & Sparkles"! But of course I love the Orenji-san Tee :D
When I get a boyfriend I'll make him wear cool clothes like that ;P
Toru style is so perfect for the character. And, that would probably translate well across to Toma in real life wear, that he'll pull it off too.
I'm not sure about some of Toru's clothes in real life...but if I find that 'Jacket', I unintentionally/intentionally get it for my guy too. I mean, really, the jacket looks good!

awww

clap claps! love this one too! thanks for sharing & it seemed that you really worked hard for this. i'll add this to my memories.

i, too, love toma's outfits in majo sai. in contrast to the uniform-like fashion in maou. but toma always looks good in evrything he wears.. even nothing. ufufufuuffneiwhfewiufheu

for toma! yay!

Re: awww

LOL, even nothing? ...hang on a minute...you're in the wrong show...lol Hahaa :P

I actually took a while making this post, cos trying to decide was hard, and I wanted to rank/comment more clothes - he does look good in so many.
Aha, so someone doing homework about this ne ? XD Thanks a lot ultraviolet chan :)

I just wondering around that if anyone could realize that how many clothes Toma is wearing in this series? And there you are just pop out from somewhere answering all my question indeed LOL

Yeah, we are so boring watching Toma wearing the same clothes in Maou (but no one cares since we love the hair !!! he looks so handsome XD) but it was totally different in Majo Saiban .. beside how goofy Toma looks with the curly hair style, the clothes he was wearing is so damn attractive and suddely it became the Tooru mode clothes XD dont say the slogan THINK TWICE along with his all colorful tee shirt

The most attractive clothes for me is when he was wearing the bright yellow jacket - you are totally right he was the sunshine !!!

But i'm not really understand when you guys say about Grease mode .. eehhh, which one .. can you paste the pic here?
The 'Grease' moment is in Episode 6, when Toru and White-san dressed up to help out Donperi Pink. I had a quick entry once with a pic:
http://ultraviolet-p1.livejournal.com/21397.html

Unconsciously, 'Clothes-watching' just becomes one part of the everything you see while watching a favourite actor/actress in a show. Hehehe.
now i know what do you mean by Grease mode !!

Hahah, the style, clothes and hair .. kih kih Toma is a romeo indeed .. XD

Thanks a lot ne violet chan XD

daring colors

Whenever my mom and I watch doramas, we would always talk about how well the actors/actresses carry their clothes..My mom would always say if she were to give someone an award for that, she would give it to Koike Teppei..Her reason was that he's daring when it comes to color combinations..

I wouldn't deny that I'll make an appeal and say "Even though Toma's not that daring with color combinations, we can't totally leave out the fact that he can get away with any clothes he wear." (of course I'd have biases as a fan, but truthfully, he does look good in anything)..fly_little_wing's right..Even the stuff that makes me go EH makes me say "kakkoi" instead..

Wathing Majo Saiban made my mom change her mind about giving the award to Teppei..And boy was I glad to see him wear clothes with daring color combination..^^

I like him most on those yellow shirts (putting aside the fact that yellow is my favorite color)..The bright yellow looks the most daring to me..Too flashy for a guy but hey, it didn't make him less of a man when he wore it..

It's great that somebody noticed this one and I really enjoyed reading the post..The comments too!..^^

Re: daring colors

It's exactly the 'image' they had to get with Toru. Toma said it had to be a specific hair, thus what we see (for Toma, I don't love the perm hair, but it's grown on me and I'm used to it now, but it's really suits the character of Toru), and also his wardrobe and the colours is definitely 'him'.

As with Nakatsu, there were bright colours too - which no one could argue that wasn't perfect for him. I haven't done my homework, but I'm sure Nakatsu's wardrobe changes couldn't be more than Toru, cos there was the school uniform that was re-worn for many scenes.

I understand what you mean about yellow could be flashy for a guy (in real life). And yes, it looks great on him. There's the citrus orange with yellow hoodie he wore in Episode 3 (not in my TOP 10) that was cool too. Just say, I know pink may look terrible on some guys, and some can actually pull it off.

Even with the red and the sparkles in my #5, I felt the outfit combo and the way Toru was carrying himself that day, he gave off a very rugged, manly feel...or maybe it was a good pair of cargo ...lol.
i loved the jacket on that Home Comfort style..and with the way his hair was pulled back by a hairband..Toma looks so fresh

i cant seem to remember the Green Collar thing..hehe, my poor memory

you must have an eye for fashion too, didnt noticed his outfits coz my eyes just glued with the diff colors of Think Twice shirt (and yes, i want to have one :c)
Sometimes he would have about 3 to 4 outfits changes in one episodes...so some of them wasn't on screen for a long time. I'm no fashion expert, but I was watching Toma alot...hehehe...

THINK TWICE is an icon now. I'm going to make my Snoopy wear one too XD
Pure brilliance on your part there ;p
Great post. Toru is so hot and sexy in any outfit though, but I agree with your 3.
Yeap, Yeap, Toru does look pretty good in the entire series. :)
The green was just so bright and nice!

I LOVE THIS!

YOU ARE SO GREAT~!!!

I like him everywhere and the THINK TWICE shirt was all I could see *sparkle sparkle*... except for his amazingly cute face of course.

And the jacket~ I agree it looks so good with him! Also bright colors~! Oh, he can pull anything off! xD We'll still love him anyway!!!

And so I'm off!

Cheers to more flailing!!!!!!

Re: I LOVE THIS!

Hahaha...of course, I see Toru/Toma, his good looking face, take in his hair/forgive his hair as he is in character, and then look at his clothes...well, and all the while watch the series/story in action and read the subtitles too...yeah...cheers for more flailing!
I LOVE THIS POST!!
thanks, paige!! <3

i loved how he had so many diff outfits in the drama too. and all the bracelets, necklaces, and ring...and i also commented on some of them. ^^ wow, i didn't notice even his sneakers match the flourescent yellow jacket!!

(actually, i read it soon after u posted, but didn't get a chance to comment till now. gomen ne!)

i really like the jacket a lot!! and i think the director loved it too, cuz toma said the director loved this jacket that he often wore in the drama, so he bought one just like it for him. ~_~ but my fav is the "checkered and sparkles". i love anything red/black plaid, and it's especially cool at night, all sparkly!! 2nd fav: the jacket. 3rd is "red ready for style", and then "sunshine bright" (yeah, this would be hard to pull off in real life. xD), and then there was that long red/blue/white plaid jacket, i really liked that too. i don't like "iconic mr.orange" very much, though it's his main/most important outfit, i guess.

paige, could u do that post about toma/nakatsu being in the background sometime? lol. i don't know if i'll ever get to it...and it's not just in hana kimi, i've noticed in other series, sometimes u can see him in the background, looking so cute, though the camera is not focusing on him. sugoi ne!! *_*
Yeah, the detail and how all the clothes and accessories came together was very well done in the show. I even liked how he would have another different coloured tee underneath all his clothes (just a bit of the edge sticking out).

Oh, was my 'The Jacket' was the same jacket he mentioned once (have to find that entry again...). I just remembered he saying it WASN'T the denim one...or something about the orange THINK TWICE t-shirt...(must really find that entry). But it didn't occur to me, it could be the same jacket. Hee... Toma should get one himself!

Oh, the background post. Needs a bit of time to get it together....have to think about it (And prep up some hw time). Are you sure you don't want to consider it still...
yes yes, another tanktop or something beneath it all, another color. that was cool how they did that. =P i read it at xdustbunny's LJ, about the jacket. haha. yeah, it would be cool if toma got it for himself!!

the toma in the BG post...yeah, it will take some time to get screencaps to do it. i really don't think i'll ever get a chance to do it, and i think u'll do a better job with it than me, anyway. =) but u don't have to, just if u want to. SOMEONE HAS TO do it!! lol. i'd love to see it.
oh..I better re-read the jacket mention there. Thx

BG post. Ok, I'll put it on to do list. Someday, I'll get to it.

cool. i'm looking forward to it~!
thanks in advance 4 taking on this task. :P
